We provide spa and fitness adventures that leave you renewed, recharged, and feeling your best. Begin the day on a scenic garden hike, savor a farm-fresh breakfast, stretch out in a yoga class, and then experience a blissful full-body massage. Our welcoming community is a key factor in many guests’ passionate loyalty—hardly a week goes by when there aren’t 20 or more guests who have been here at least 10 times. Making new friends is easy. “Being yourself” is easy. Finding solitude and quiet is as easy as finding laughter and the excitement born of new experiences. We are consistently named one of the top destination spas in the world.
Our 3-, 4-, and 7- night retreats include:
Spa treatments, holistic therapies, hands-on cooking classes, and private sessions are available for an extra fee.
Why Visit The Ranch?
“When people ask me about Rancho La Puerta, I tell them I am heading off on a ‘wellness week.’ It’s a week where I remove myself from the responsibilities and stresses of day-to-day life and reconnect with the things that give me hope and energy in a beautiful setting.”
—Heather
A Natural Oasis
Family-owned and operated since 1940, Rancho La Puerta was the world’s first fitness resort and spa. Edmond and Deborah Szekely co-founded Rancho La Puerta.
His views on philosophy, the nutritional value of just-picked fresh pesticide-free vegetables, exercise, and what we would call “ecology” today, were revolutionary for the times. As World War II engulfed the globe, the Professor — a Romanian citizen — had become a man without a country. He was told he had to leave the U.S. or be returned to his country of origin, where his Jewish heritage was a death sentence. So, they crossed the border. They found land with an adobe storage shed to rent, and their camp turned into a haven for health-seekers. In 1940 they instructed guests to “bring their own tent” and visit for $17.50 a week. Deborah Szekely still lectures at The Ranch on a weekly basis.
Getting To The Ranch
Tecate, Baja California, Mexico, is 1.5 hours from San Diego International Airport and about four miles from the U.S. border. Driving to The Ranch via the Tecate border crossing is easy and peaceful. We offer Saturday transportation to and from the airport and partner with limo services and taxis for guests who arrive or depart mid-week. Guests also have the option to park their cars at the border, and we can pick them up.

True or False? The Ranch is located in Tecate, Baja California, Mexico?
“Follow Your Bliss” is what you’re told upon arrival at The Ranch. With so much to choose from – every guest’s week here looks a little different (whether you’re into hiking, fitness classes, yoga, art, gardening, etc.). I loved all the hiking trails, cardio boxing, fitness & Pilates classes. It is such a great property for a couple’s fitness break, solo recharge, girl’s getaway or mother-daughter trip (minimum age is 14 except for Family Week). I think wellness-focused trips are more important than ever! I was sad to leave, but I’ll be back!

Our ideal guests are:

On average, how many fitness classes are offered per day?
Trek Majestic Mountain Trails
The Ranch offers the most extensive on-site hiking program of any spa, anywhere. Over 40 miles of trails range from rolling meadow walks to challenging, steep hikes on mountainous terrain. Distances range from about 2 miles to 5 or more miles. Daily hikes at dawn year-round are complemented by an intensive extended daily hiking program during the winter months.
Hike Examples:

Healthy and Seasonal Farm-to-Table Cuisine
The Ranch diet is lacto-ovo pescatarian including dairy, eggs and seafood but no meats or poultry. Meals balance fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, dairy, eggs, and seafood. Our cuisine provides protein, vitamins, minerals, and probiotics to fuel an active week. Gluten-free, vegan and allergy-friendly options are available.
The Dining Hall
Meals at the Ranch are about creating camaraderie and community. Guests come together and enjoy each other’s company. Breakfast and lunch are informal, while dinner is a sit-down affair.
This is a longtime tradition, and our guests prefer it. If you wish to enjoy wine throughout the week, it is available for purchase at Bazaar Del Sol—a gift shop and cafe with patio seating and views of Mt. Kuchumaa. Enjoy it there or at your room or patio.
Inner Journey
We live in a fast-paced, chaotic environment where it’s rare that we’re not plugged in to some form of media. At Rancho La Puerta, you don’t need an “app” to unplug from life’s clutter – our Mindfulness Reflective classes will help you tune in to your spirit and navigate your inner terrain without the constant bombardment of outside distractions.
Class Examples:
Spa + Holistic Therapies
Our three health and beauty centers will be your sanctuaries for the week, each staffed by skilled estheticians and therapists who have been widely trained. Our treatments use aromatic and medicinal herbs and other healing plants grown in our organic gardens at Tres Estrellas. Treatments are a valuable and therapeutic part of a balanced Ranch experience.
Healing spa therapies include massage, body treatments, facials, wraps and salon treatments such as manicures. Holistic Therapies include Craniosacral Therapy and Reiki to Feldenkrais®, WATSU®, and WaterDance.
Highlights:
WATSU® (also known as Water Shiatsu) focuses on releasing impediments along our meridians – the channels through which our “Chi” or life-force flow. Sessions are held in 96-degree warm water and incorporate a series of stretches that lengthens muscles while increasing flexibility and range of motion.
Embodying Wellbeing Ritual: Inspired by ancient Mexican ceremonies, this treatment cultivates a deep connection to yourself and nature. The journey starts with a ritual sage smudge, ceremonial conch blessing and intention setting. You’ll then retreat to a private outdoor spa tent where you’ll receive bodywork that brings harmony to mind, body, and spirit.
Opportunities to Learn
Each week, we invite noted guest speakers, talented performers and workshop leaders—authors, politicians, musicians, artists and other leaders in their fields—to present afternoon learning experiences and evening lectures. Our staff members are experts in many fields and guide educational experiences as well.

Delight Your Senses…
Our Annual Chamber Music Festival features ten of the world’s finest musicians who inspire guests with extraordinary performances. In addition to daily concerts, guests can enjoy talks by the musicians, participate in music workshops and encounter “random acts of music,” in unexpected places.
Tres Estrellas Organic Farm
Ranch guests enjoy the flavors of freshly picked fruits and vegetables year-round. Visits to our 6-acre organic farm, located about 2 miles up the valley from most of our facilities and accommodations, take place almost daily: a favorite is an early morning guided hike that combines a 2-mile walk through rolling meadows and chaparral with a welcoming breakfast, a tour of the gardens, and an introduction to the principles of organic farming led by our charismatic head gardener.
Hands-On Cooking Classes
During our cooking classes at our culinary school, La Cocina Que Canta, the kitchen fills with conversation, questions, laughter…and the savory scents of rosemary, roasting peppers, fennel, barbecued shrimp, and other “Mexican-Mediterranean” essential ingredients that characterize a fusion of both our healthy, light-eating style and that of the teaching chef and their favorite techniques and recipes. La Cocina hosts internationally renowned guest chefs and cookbook authors such as Deborah Madison, Chef Virginia Willis, John Ash, and Anne Willan.
Tierra Alegre Juice Bar
Tierra Alegre offers seasonal, organic cold-pressed juices and smoothies, and most ingredients arrive straight from our farm. Guests have the option to participate in daily juice fasts.
My casita’s patio was heaven: I loved stepping outside in the morning to watch the birds hop along atop a sun-warmed boulder beneath the oaks, while the morning sun descended Mt. Kuchumaa like a golden curtain.
– Sheila
Casitas
Our 86 casitas have distinct personality and architectural flair. Guests are welcomed with wood beamed ceilings, sweeping archways, hand-painted tiles and museum-quality folk art. All accommodations have attached patios enveloped in nature. Most have fireplaces, a hallmark feature at The Ranch. Many exceed 1,000 square feet.
Our standard casitas range from Ranchera Solos, or roomy studios with one bed, to Villas Suites, which are house-like, with two separate bedrooms and two private bathrooms.

Our three Villas Cielo are true havens of tranquility and intimacy. Designed to be highly customizable, each villa features a spacious master suite, which overlooks a living room that can be transformed into a residential gym or business office. They have 2,200 square feet of combined indoor-and-outdoor space and sleep up to two guests.
